Designing a print magazine: Momma Bear
Today, I'm pulling back the curtain on one of my all-time favorite projects: Momma Bear Magazine. Grab your favorite cozy blanket and settle in for a heart-to-heart as we delve into the story behind this labor of love.
Picture this: a corner of the world where moms rule supreme, where their stories, quirks, and everything in between take center stage… judgment free, where everyone is welcome. Momma Bear Magazine wasn't just a publication; it was a movement… a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of motherhood's rawest, realest moments.
The print magazine was more of a coffee table book. Perfect bound with a gold foil embossed logo, the soft-to-the-touch cover was easily my favorite part. The thick matte pages were styled like classic coffee table books with clean columns of text and big, classic, editorial typography. Print Ninja did an incredible job printing and shipping our multi-thousand copy order.
I curated all the stories, photographs and artwork from Instagram, actually. When I was up late into the night feeding my babies and rocking them to sleep, I would scroll instagram to stay awake. It was there that I would discover so many amazing women sharing their stories with raw honesty, poetic love, and authentic writing. This was ten+ years ago, when instagram was still shown in chronological order and reels were far from a thing ;) Back then, heartfelt story-telling trumped all. Ah, I miss those days. Anyway, I would reach out to the mothers directly and ask if I could share their story. We coordinated handoff of the copy and images, and I arranged it into a layout for print.
Original content was created with an amazing stylist, Michelle Everett and our interns Julia and Katherine.
And of course, let's rewind to the Kickstarter days – a time of bold dreams, sweaty palms, and a whole lot of faith. In just 30 whirlwind days, our tribe rallied behind us, propelling us past our fundraising goal to a jaw-dropping $15,000. Talk about feeling the love!
As I look back on the Momma Bear Magazine journey, I'm humbled by the outpouring of love, laughter, and late-night editing sessions. It's not just about a magazine; it's about the countless connections made, the hearts touched, and the laughter shared.
Stay tuned as we peel back the layers of more passion projects and share the stories that keep our creative fires burning. And hey, if you're ready to inject some heart and soul into your brand, I'm here to make the magic happen. Let's create something extraordinary together – one heartfelt project at a time.
